Our Principles of Funding

We want to fund ambitious projects that deliver tangible, quantifiable benefits in any field of rehabilitation.
Our projects will address three key challenges for the rehabtech pipeline in the East Midlands:
  1. Widening health inequalities
  2. Reaching people who typically do not engage with rehab programmes and opportunities, with particular interest in at-risk groups
  3. Disconnect between rehab research infrastructure and businesses in the region
We will fund projects that accelerate translation of excellent research into viable devices, products and services that meet the needs of communities, and progress rehabtech solutions toward commercialisation.

FOCUS ON IMPACT

EMERGE RehabTech is a UKRI-funded Place-Based Impact Accelerator. The work we fund must focus on delivering impact through advances in rehabtech, improving health outcomes, promoting wellbeing, and enhancing quality of life for individuals and communities. We will not fund research.
Projects must build on existing research and look to achieve impact within the lifetime of the project or demonstrate strong potential for impact soon after the project is completed.

CO-CREATION

Projects we fund must involve at least one external non-academic partner to enhance translational research impact and embed real-world benefit. Partners may be clinical, from industry, government, or the third sector including charities and community groups.

CAPACITY BUILDING

EMERGE aims to establish the East Midlands as the UK’s RehabTech Valley, capitalising on existing capacity and the wider landscape of investment in the region.
We will nurture wide-ranging talent in the region, support diverse researchers in terms of background and disciplines that span and overlap with Engineering and Physical Sciences, and representing all career stages.
