Our approach to PPIE

Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement (PPIE) is a core part of the EMERGE programme to ensure that people and communities are meaningfully involved in shaping rehabilitation technologies, especially those who are most affected by health inequalities.

We want to ensure new technologies better reflect the real needs and priorities of diverse communities, strengthen public confidence and skills in rehabtech and in the long term reduce health inequalities across the East Midlands.

Public Advisory Group

Our Public Advisory Group has oversight of all EMERGE activities and the group acts in an advisory capacity to support embedding meaningful PPIE and help us to shape the overall programme.

The group is co-chaired by Dr Kris Clements and our public contributor Deborah Butler.

Community Roadshow

We are developing a community-facing roadshow to bring rehabilitation technologies into local spaces, showcase emerging rehabtech, and gather real-world insights.

By engaging directly with under‑represented and underserved communities, the roadshow aims to build trust, understand genuine rehabilitation needs, and ensure EMERGE innovations are shaped by the people they are designed to support.

This work is being led by our Early Career Researchers, Dr Simon Briley and Dr Lulu Xu.

If you are interested in getting involved or would like us to come and visit your community please get in touch at EMERGErehabtech@ntu.ac.uk
